n8n OpenAI Integration: Build AI-Powered Workflows That Actually Do Work

Getting Started: Connecting n8n to OpenAI
You need an OpenAI API key and an n8n instance. Let me walk through both.
Step 1: Get Your OpenAI API Key
1. Go to platform.openai.com

Step 2: Set Up n8n

Step 3: Configure OpenAI Credentials in n8n
n8n has a built-in OpenAI node that makes configuration simple:

Understanding the OpenAI Node
The n8n OpenAI node supports several operations:
Text Generation (Chat Completion)
This is the most common operation. You send a prompt and receive a generated response.
Key settings:
– Model: Choose between GPT-4o, GPT-4, GPT-3.5-turbo, etc. GPT-4o offers the best balance of quality and speed for most workflows.
– Messages: Define the system prompt and user message
– Temperature: Controls randomness (0 = deterministic, 1 = creative). I use 0.3 for data processing and 0.7 for content generation.
– Max Tokens: Limits the response length. Set this to avoid unexpectedly long (and expensive) outputs.
Image Generation (DALL-E)
Generate images from text descriptions. Useful for automated social media content or product mockups.
Audio Transcription (Whisper)
Transcribe audio files to text. Perfect for processing voicemails, meeting recordings, or podcast episodes.
Embeddings
Generate vector embeddings for semantic search, clustering, or similarity matching.
The Main Workflow: Email Summarization Pipeline
Let us build a complete workflow that monitors your inbox, extracts the content of incoming emails, sends them to OpenAI for summarization, and posts the summaries to a Slack channel.
The Architecture
Email Trigger --> Extract Content --> OpenAI (Summarize) --> Format Message --> Slack (Post Summary)
This is one of the most useful workflows I have built. I get dozens of emails a day, and many of them are long newsletters, reports, or updates. Instead of reading each one, I check my #email-summaries Slack channel and get the key points in seconds.
Step 1: Email Trigger

The trigger fires whenever a new email arrives in your inbox. Each email comes with fields like from, subject, text (plain text body), and html (HTML body).
Step 2: Filter Relevant Emails
Not every email needs summarization. Add an IF node to filter:
- Skip emails from no-reply addresses
- Skip very short emails (less than 200 characters)
- Only process emails from specific senders or with specific subjects

Step 3: Extract and Clean the Content
Email content is often messy -- HTML formatting, signatures, forwarded chains, and legal disclaimers. Add a Code node to clean it:

Provide context:
The target audience is startup founders and tech professionals in Latin America. The tone should be practical, conversational, and backed by real experience. Avoid jargon unless you define it.
Set constraints:
The article should be 1500-2000 words. Include at least 3 practical examples. Every section should have an actionable takeaway.
Include your voice:
Write in first person from the perspective of Javier, a startup consultant in Chile who uses this tool daily. Reference personal experience where relevant.
Workflow 3: Support Ticket Classification
This workflow automatically categorizes incoming support tickets:

I have processed over 5,000 tickets through this workflow, and the classification accuracy is above 95%. The few misclassifications are edge cases where tickets span multiple categories.
Workflow 4: Meeting Notes Processor
After every client meeting, I run the recording through this workflow:

OpenAI API costs can add up if you are not careful. Here is how I keep my bills under control:
Choose the Right Model
- GPT-4o-mini: Use for simple tasks like classification, extraction, and short summaries. Fast and cheap.
- GPT-4o: Use for complex tasks like content generation, nuanced analysis, and tasks that need high accuracy.
- GPT-4: Use only when you need the absolute best quality and cost is not a concern.

Limit Token Usage
Always set Max Tokens on your OpenAI nodes. Without a limit, a single malformed request could generate thousands of tokens and cost dollars.

Cache Repeated Queries

AI responses are non-deterministic, which means your error handling needs to be robust.
Handle Rate Limits
OpenAI has rate limits based on your account tier. When you hit them:

How much does it cost to run OpenAI workflows in n8n?
The cost depends entirely on your usage volume and model choice. For context, my email summarization workflow processes about 50 emails per day using GPT-4o-mini and costs approximately $0.15 per month. Content generation workflows using GPT-4o cost more -- roughly $0.02 to $0.05 per article draft. Classification tasks are very cheap at around $0.001 per classification.
