The Enterprise Automation Landscape
Tray.io positions itself as an enterprise integration platform with pricing to match. n8n started as an open-source alternative but has grown into a serious enterprise contender. Having evaluated both for client projects, the differences are stark.
Pricing: The Elephant in the Room
Tray.io does not publish pricing publicly. Based on industry reports and my conversations with their sales team, plans start around $600-800/month for basic usage and can reach $2,000-5,000/month for enterprise tiers.
n8n Cloud ranges from $24 to $300/month depending on usage. Self-hosted n8n is free. For a detailed breakdown, see my n8n pricing guide.
The cost difference is not marginal. It is 10-20x. For startups and mid-size companies, this alone makes the decision clear.
Visual Builder
Both platforms offer drag-and-drop visual workflow builders. Tray.io has a polished enterprise UI with good documentation. n8n has a clean, modern interface that has improved dramatically over the past two years.
In practical terms, both are equally capable for building complex workflows. n8n edges ahead with its code node flexibility and community-contributed nodes.
Integrations
Tray.io offers 500+ connectors, many designed for enterprise systems like SAP, Workday, and ServiceNow. n8n provides 400+ integrations with a focus on modern SaaS tools and APIs.
If you need deep integrations with legacy enterprise systems, Tray.io might have an edge. For modern tech stacks, n8n covers everything you need.
Self-Hosting
n8n offers full self-hosting capability. Tray.io is cloud-only. For organizations with strict data residency requirements, this is a dealbreaker in favor of n8n.
Community and Support
n8n has a thriving open-source community with active forums, shared workflow templates, and community-built nodes. Tray.io offers dedicated enterprise support but lacks the community ecosystem.
Verdict
Unless you specifically need Tray.io enterprise connectors and have the budget for $1,000+/month automation spend, n8n is the better choice. It offers 90% of the functionality at 10% of the cost. Read my full n8n review for more details.
